Where does this reputation come from that Dutch yachts and shipyards are the best in the world? Based on the history and culture The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are characterised as a period of rapid growth in Dutch ship-building. Holland was the most powerful shipping and trading nation in the world. Dutch shipbuilders dominated the European market. They used more efficient building methods and produced ships of better design than their European rivals. The world’s first ever yachts were constructed in Holland. The Russian Czar Peter the Great visited Holland in 1697, he brought back Dutch knowledge about shipbuilding but also the passion for yachting. 1718, the czar opened the yacht club Nevsky Flot in St. Petersburg, two years before the opening of the Royal Cork Yacht Club in England (which claims to be the first yacht club in the world).
